Blues Boss Maresca Dismisses Man City Links as Pure Rumour
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has labelled fresh reports connecting him with a return to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The 45-year-old, who once served as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man in Manchester, responded to the persistent speculation surrounding his future.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, is under contract running until 2029, with a potential extension option.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is no time for these kind of things."
He went on to explain, Primarily, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I have stated many times, is just about this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to a role in Italy with Juventus. So I ignore it because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, currently sitting fourth in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a lunchtime fixture.
Tensions After Recent Comments
Maresca's most recent comments follow in the wake of he referred to a previous 48-hour period as his most difficult since joining Chelsea.
Those initial remarks had fueled considerable talk of a possible rift between the manager and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When asked if he had since spoken with the club's sporting directors, Maresca replied, "We are in the same building, so we speak about different things. But about the Everton media session, no."
The manager did confirm he would definitely stay at the club for the coming campaign and called on supporters to keep backing the team".
In brighter news, Maresca indicated that injured forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return sooner than expected, possibly in contention for a match against Aston Villa later this month.
Perspective: Unresolved Tension
The apparent strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board remains as an open wound that continues to create unease.
While there has been no further escalation of the situation in the open, there has also been no resolution forthcoming, leaving the matter unaddressed.
The atmosphere during the manager's media briefings has become increasingly awkward, raising fears it could undermine what has up to now been a decent beginning to the campaign.
Chelsea's sporting position is positive: they are fourth in the league, have reached the League Cup semi-finals, and can secure a favourable Champions League position with strong results in their remaining matches.
The lingering question is whether this behind-the-scenes situation might begin to affect a squad that was beginning to look settled.
