Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
