Individuals who endured sexual abuse by church officials have expressed renewed hope following their first encounter with the new Pope at the Holy See.

The board president, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the Pope's choice to engage with them so early in his papacy sent a strong message about his commitment to tackling the issue.

Worldwide Strict Approach Pushed

The group is advocating for a global strict approach that would defrock any clergy member who admits to or is proven of abusing a minor. This approach has been implemented in the United States.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "resistance in certain regions of the globe" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is pushback," Hickey stated.

Legacy Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the role in May, has inherited this persistent issue that has haunted the Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to resolve the situation included an historic summit on child abuse within the Church and changes to canon law to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Personal Link

For the representative, who prefers they/them pronouns, the drive for global implementation of the measure is personal. The North American advocate shared they were abused by a priest who was later moved between different parishes.

"We trust this will establish the direction for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," they expressed. "We have the same goal, we want to end abuse by religious officials."

Historic Meeting

Seven representatives of the coalition, which includes victims and advocates from over thirty nations, met with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The discussion, originally scheduled for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The pontiff was described as "quite empathetic" when hearing the story of a female survivor victimized at a Catholic residential school for native youth in Canada.

They noted the leader was "compassionate" about their personal story and appeared "very humble, funny, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I felt like he was sincere, realistic, and receptive and eager to collaborate with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The group is hoping that changes to church regulations will enable the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy globally.

They have consulted specialists and gathered materials that they plan to submit to Pope Leo.

"He seemed engaged in looking at it," Hickey remarked.

Accountability Highlighted

A recent church-ordered report emphasized the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or dismissal of Church leaders or staff in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The document also noted that victims repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for church leaders and senior officials to be held accountable for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

The representative shared they informed the pontiff at the beginning of their meeting: "This is as much a challenge for him to participate in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the meeting, they voiced hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, coming together and establishing a connection and continuing to build that relationship is a step in the correct path," they commented.

They added that they shared with the pontiff: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I feel like we can alter how the story ends - he appreciated that."
